Fort-Gibson
is nestled among the rolling green hills of northeastern Oklahoma. This area is situated in the foothills of the Ozarks and surrounded by four rivers, three lakes and many meandering creeks. Fort Gibson is located just across the Arkansas River from Muskogee, Oklahoma and about 45 miles southeast of Tulsa. Fort Gibson is the oldest community in the state, established in 1824. It offers the quality of small town life with the advantages of a growing community. It is home to the Fort Gibson Historical Site, which was established in 1824 in Indian territory by Col. Matthew Arbuckle and named for Col. George Gibson, head of the Army Commissary Department. The fort was the westernmost in the north-south chain of forts intended to protect the American West frontier. The Army first abandoned the fort in 1857. During the Civil War, Union troops occupied the fort, which they called Fort Blunt. The fort was permanently abandoned in 1890 as the Indian Territory was opening for settlement by non-Indians. The buildings of the fort were rebuilt by the Works Project Administration in the 1930s. The area also includes the Fort Gibson National Cemetery. The town of Fort Gibson is only five miles south of Fort Gibson Lake, which is known for its fishing, boating and annual Chili Cook-off.

Fort Gibson Weather & Climate

Eastern Oklahoma has a temperate four-season climate with occasional extremes in temperature and rainfall. Eastern Oklahoma is situated near the heart of Tornado Alley. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail, damaging winds or tornadoes. There is also the potential for flooding in eastern Oklahoma, however, a comprehensive flood management plan is in place for the area. Summers are usually accompanied by high humidity. Autumn is short, but often the most pleasant time of the year, consisting of sunny days and cool nights. Winter temperatures are generally mild, but occasionally experience extremes. Annual snowfall averages around nine inches.
