Checotah
is a small town located in McIntosh county in east-central Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,481 residents. The town was named for the first elected Chief of the Creek Nation after the Civil War, Samuel Checote. Checotah is the hometown of 2005 American Idol winner and country music superstar, Carrie Underwood. She wrote a song titled I Aint in Checotah Anymore, which is all about the little town. Checotah is also home to several antique malls, a Civil War battle site and a downtown historic district. The town of Checotah is near Eufaula Lake, which is a man-made lake located on the Canadian River, about 27 miles upstream from its confluence with the Arkansas River. It is the largest lake in the state of Oklahoma. The construction of the Eufaula Lake dam began in 1956 and was completed in 1964. It is a popular lake for boating, fishing and hunting. The historic landmark, Standing Rock, was located in the middle of the Canadian River about two miles below the junction of the North and South Canadians. Standing Rock is now covered by the waters of Lake Eufaula. When the lake is at its top level at585 feet, the top of the huge upright rock is approximately 25 feet below the surface. Checotah also claims to be the Steerwrestling Capital of the World.
