Tahlequah
is located in Cherokee County in northeast Oklahoma in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. As of the 2000 census, the population was 14,458 residents. The city of Tahlequah is the site of the main campus of Northeastern State University and is also the capital of the Cherokee Nation. The name, Tahlequah (pronounced Tal a Kwa,) according to legend, is derived from the Cherokee word Taligwu meaning two is enough. The two refers to a meeting between tribal elders that presumably took place shortly after the Trail of Tears. Three tribal elders had planned to meet to determine the location of the Cherokee Nations permanent capital. Two arrived and waited for the third. As dusk approached, they decided that two is enough." Tahlequah is situated in what is known as Lakes County in the midst of the Illinois River Valley and near Lake Tenkiller and Lake Fort Gibson. The Illinois River is considered Oklahoma's best known scenic river. It is an excellent river for fishing, especially for smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, walleye and various other species. Other activities on the river include canoeing, tubing and boating. Lake Tenkiller was created in 1953 with the construction of Tenkiller Ferry Dam. It was named after a local Native American family who operated a ferry service across the Illinois River where the dam now stands. Two state parks are located at Lake Tenkiller and offer swimming, boating, scuba diving, hiking, and camping. The area is also ranked as one of the best bird watching spots in the state of Oklahoma.
