Claremore
is the county seat for Rogers County, located along historic Route 66 in northeast Oklahoma. The estimated population of the town is 17,200 residents. Claremore is home to the only public four-year university in the Tulsa area but is most well-known for being the home of entertainer Will Rogers. The coming of railways to Indian Territory was the driving factor in Claremores early growth, as two early lines intersected in the center of town. Another major factor in the growth of Claremore was due to an area known as Radium Town. In 1903, a man named George Eaton was drilling just east of Claremore and struck an underground pool of water that smelled of sulfur. A local doctor tested the water and marketed it as a cure. The water, known as Radium Water, contained impurities that supposedly made it medically useful. Bath houses sprang up all over the area of Claremore and many are still standing today. Attractions in Claremore include the Will Rogers Memorial and Birthplace Ranch. The museum houses Rogers memorabilia including saddles, photographs, clothing, scripts, and many other items relating to his life. The memorial has three theatres, a special children¢s museum, research library, archives, and an art gallery. The museum frames the Rogers family tomb in the sunken garden. Other Claremore attractions include the Oklahoma Military Academy Museum, the J.M. Davis Historical Arms Museum and Claremore Main Street, which features over 400 antique stores and specialty shops.

Northeast Oklahoma has a temperate subtropical climate with occasional extremes in temperature and rainfall. Northeast Oklahoma is situated near the heart of Tornado Alley. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail, damaging winds or tornadoes. There is also the potential for flooding in northeast Oklahoma, however, a comprehensive flood management plan is in place for the area. Summers are accompanied by high humidity. Autumn is usually short, but pleasant, consisting of sunny days followed by cool nights. Winter temperatures are generally mild, but occasionally experience extremes while annual snowfall averages about 9 inches.
