Catoosa
is located along historic Route 66 in northeast Oklahoma. ItĒs situated in Rogers and Wagoner Counties and the population was 5,449 residents as of the 2000 census. The Port of Catoosa is the furthest inland seaport in the United States, linking Tulsa to the Arkansas River and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico. The town of Catoosa is well known for The Blue Whale, which is located just east of town and is one of the most recognizable attractions on old Route 66. It was built by Hugh Davis in the early 1970s as an anniversary gift to his wife Zelta, who collected whale figurines. Originally, the pond surrounding the massive Blue Whale was intended only for family use. However, as locals began to come to enjoy its cool waters, Davis brought in tons of sand, picnic tables, hired life guards, and opened his masterpiece to the public. Originally called NatureĒs Acres, Davis continued to add to the roadside attraction until it eventually included The Fun and Swim Blue Whale and the A.R.K. (Animal Reptile Kingdom). The Blue Whale also featured Indian Chief Wolf-Robe Hunt, an Acoma Indian who was famous in his own right for his Indian paintings and as a highly skilled silversmith. Chief Wolf-Robe Hunt once ran the Arrowood Trading post across the highway from the Blue Whale attraction. The Blue Whale was closed in 1988 but the Route 66 landmark has since been partially restored by the fund-raising efforts of local citizens. On July 15, 2002, the Blue Whale made a national appearance in the syndicated comic strip Zippy the Pinhead.

Northeast Oklahoma has a temperate subtropical climate with occasional extremes in temperature and rainfall. Northeast Oklahoma is situated near the heart of Tornado Alley. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail, damaging winds or tornadoes. There is also the potential for flooding in northeast Oklahoma, however, a comprehensive flood management plan is in place for the area. Summers are accompanied by high humidity. Autumn is usually short, but pleasant, consisting of sunny days followed by cool nights. Winter temperatures are generally mild, but occasionally experience extremes while annual snowfall averages about 9 inches.
