Vinita is located in Craig County in the northeast corner of Oklahoma. The population was 6,472 as of the 2000 census. Vinita was established in 1871 and has the distinction of being the first city in the state with electricity. A McDonald's restaurant built over the top of Interstate 44 in Vinita claims to be the worlds largest McDonalds restaurant in terms of area, occupying 29,135 people. Vinita is considered the gateway to the beautiful "green country" nestled in northeast Oklahoma, between Joplin, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are several attractions in Vinita. To begin with, historic Route 66 winds its way through the city's downtown district. Many historic landmarks, eateries, and attractions are located along this historic highway. The Eastern Trails Museum houses several exhibits which detail the story of the areas early years. Early pioneer and Indian artifacts are featured at the Museum. Not far from Vinita is Cabin Creek, which was the site of a huge Civil War battle. In 1864, Confederate forces captured over 100 wagons, about 720 mules and other goods valued at $1,500,000. The Battle of Cabin Creek is re-enacted every three years and in-between, you can visit the battle site, which is open daily. Vinita is also home to Summerside Winery, which is one of Oklahoma's award winning wineries. It is located just off of Historic Route 66 & the I-44 turnpike gate (Exit 289.) The winery is open daily year round and features a lovely outdoor patio, private dining room and wine cellar.

Northeast Oklahoma has a temperate subtropical climate with four seasons and occasional extremes in temperature and rainfall. Northeast Oklahoma is situated near the heart of Tornado Alley. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail, damaging winds or tornadoes. There is also the potential for flooding in northeast Oklahoma, however, a comprehensive flood management plan is in place for the area. Summers are accompanied by high humidity. Autumn is usually short, but pleasant, consisting of sunny days followed by cool nights. Winter temperatures are generally mild, but occasionally experience extremes while annual snowfall averages about 9 inches.
