Meers
is a small community located along Highway 225 in Comanche County in southwest Oklahoma. It was founded as a gold mining town in 1901. Today, the only remaining building of the original town is the Meers Store & Restaurant, which Food Network named as one of the best in the nation, largely due to its signature Meersburger. Consequently, the town of Meers bills itself as "Home of the Best Burger in Oklahoma." The population of this tiny town consists only of the family that owns the restaurant and store. The Meersburger is a 7 inch diameter burger made exclusively from prize winning Texas Longhorn beef raised on the familys own ranch. The Meers Store and Restaurant serves a delicious selection of other foods, including barbecue, home-baked breads, and desserts including homemade ice cream. With a warm and friendly atmosphere, the walls of the restaurant are lined with photos of people who have visited and eaten there, along with original decor dating back to 1901. Meers is near the city of Lawton, which offers many attractions including the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museums.

Southwest Oklahoma has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state. Precipitation varies but averages 50 inches in the southwest. Snowfall averages 9 inches a year in Oklahoma. Southwest Oklahoma is tornado-prone. Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but are easily most frequent during springtime. April, May and June represent the months of peak occurrence. May's average of 20 tornado observations per month is the greatest. The winter months each average less than one tornado per month. Most, but not all, of Oklahoma's tornadoes travel to the north and east.
