Lawton
is located in southwest Oklahoma, about 88 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The city of Lawton is home to several interesting attractions. The Lawton-Fort Sill Discovery Trail takes visitors on a tour of four of the area's top attractions. Easy to follow Discovery Trail cards are available at the Chamber of Commerce and the Museum of the Great Plains. The first stop on the trail is Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museums, which was founded in 1868-69. Nearly all of the original buildings constructed survive, comprising the most complete fort from the Indian Wars period still in existence today. Designated as the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark by the Department of Interior, 50 original buildings are included at the site. All of these structures house exhibit galleries, historic property storage areas and research collections comprising the largest museum in the U.S. Army system. Also included along the Lawton-Fort Sill trail is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, the Museum of the Great Plains and Holy City. Built in the 1930s, Holy City includes 110 acres in the middle of the wildlife refuge and features 22 native granite buildings, including the 1936 World Chapel. Other Lawton attractions include the Historic Mattie Beal Home and the Leslie Powell Art Gallery. For outdoor recreation, Lawton is near several lakes, which offer swimming, fishing, picnicking, camping, paddle boats, miniature golf, hiking and more.

Southwest Oklahoma has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state. Precipitation varies but averages 50 inches in the southwest. Snowfall averages 9 inches a year in Oklahoma. Southwest Oklahoma is tornado-prone. Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but are easily most frequent during springtime. April, May and June represent the months of peak occurrence. May's average of 20 tornado observations per month is the greatest. The winter months each average less than one tornado per month. Most, but not all, of Oklahoma's tornadoes travel to the north and east.
