Quartz-Mountain is home to a secluded mountain resort, located 17 miles north of the town of Altus in the Wichita Mountains of southwestern Oklahoma near the Texas border. It is just two and a half hours from Oklahoma City. Called Southwest Oklahoma's premier destination resort, Quartz Mountain is a unique location for a getaway, a wedding or other special event or conference. The resort offers 122 rooms decorated with rugged western theme furniture and Native American artwork. Although the area is isolated, guests can keep in touch with the world through high-speed internet service in their rooms or in the resort lobby. Quartz Mountain also offers a 6,260-acre lake for recreational use and five camping areas. There are seven comfort stations and four stations with showers around the lake at Quartz Mountain. Excursion train rides are another attraction offered at Quartz Mountain. The two hour narrated round trip takes approximately two hours. Quartz Mountain Flyer passenger parking and the boarding area is at the intersection of Routes 44 and 44A, approximately 17 miles North of Altus, Oklahoma.

Quartz Mountain Weather & Climate

Southwest Oklahoma has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state. Precipitation varies but averages 50 inches in the southwest. Snowfall averages 9 inches a year in Oklahoma. Southwesst Oklahoma is tornado-prone. Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but are easily most frequent during springtime. April, May and June represent the months of peak occurrence. May's average of 20 tornado observations per month is the greatest. The winter months each average less than one tornado per month. Most, but not all, of Oklahoma's tornadoes travel to the north and east.
