Altus is a city located in the southwest corner of Oklahoma. It serves as the county seat for Jackson County and has a population of 21,447 residents. Called "a city with a future to share," Altus is home to Altus Air Force Base, which is the United States Air Force's training base for pilots and aircrew in the C-17and KC-135. Altus is also home to Western Oklahoma State College and Southwest Technology Center. Each year, the city of Altus presents their Christmas in the Park, which gained state-wide recognition by winning the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Award for governmental projects. Altus is located near the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The Wichita Mountains are the oldest mountain range in North America and were first designated as a Forest Preserve by President McKinley in 1901. President Roosevelt changed its designation to a Game Preserve in 1905 and it is the oldest managed wildlife preserve in the United States. Filled with pristine lakes and streams, rugged canyons, mountains and grasslands, the refuge is ideal for hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, photography and other permitted outdoor activities. The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge gives visitors a view of the prairie lands as they existed prior to development of the Great Plains. The rock outcrops, forests and grass prairies create excellent habitat for herds of buffalo, elk, deer, and longhorn cattle.
