Kaw-City
is a small town of approximately 400 located in Kay County in north-central Oklahoma. Due to its location near Kaw Lake, tourism is the major industry of the town. Kaw Lake is a 38-mile long, man-made lake that offers 170 miles of shoreline that encompasses over 16,000 acres. Kaw Lake is a recreational paradise for boating, skiing, hunting and fishing, picnicking, and camping opportunities. Kaw Lake has well-designed public campgrounds tucked into coves and inlets, and also trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking and, of course, lots of clean, fresh air. It's also a good place for viewing wildlife and for birding. The Kaw Lake area is an ideal vantage point to view nesting eagles in winter. Kaw Lake is known for its great hauls of catfish and it also has bass, crappie, walleye, stripers and spoonbill. There are 13 boat ramps located around the lake and campers can select from 268 family campsites, many of which are equipped with water and electric hookups. There are also two group areas at the Osage Cove Public Use Area. Kaw City is approximately one mile south of the lake and offers services that cater to tourists.

South-central Kansas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Temperatures range from an average of low of about 20 degrees in January to an average high of nearly 93 degrees in July. The first fall freeze typically occurs between the second week of October and mid-November, and the last spring freeze occurs between the end of March and the final week of April. The area receives over 30 inches of precipitation in an average year, with the most occurring in May and June. Winter snowfall averages almost 17 inches but the median is less than 8 inches per year. The area is vulnerable to severe weather, with frequent thunderstorms in spring and summer. Tornadoes are also a possibility in south-central Kansas.
