Ada
is a small city located in south-central Oklahoma's Pontotoc County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 16,008 residents. Situated among the rolling hills of southern Oklahoma, Ada is an Oklahoma Main Street City, as well as a Tree City USA member. Ada's beginnings date to 1889, when a native Texan named Jeff Reed was appointed to carry the mail from Stonewall to Center, two small communities in Indian Territory. With his family and his stock, he sought a place for a home on a prairie midway between the two points, where he constructed a log house and started Reeds Store. Other settlers soon built homes nearby. In 1891, a post office was established and named after Reeds oldest daughter, Ada. The community was incorporated as a city in 1901. Ada is home to a four year university, offers many big city amenities and is a safe, progressive community. Home to several city parks, Ada offers swimming, hiking, horseshoes, tennis, picnicking, children's playgrounds and more. The city also hosts an annual Spirit of Christmas festival. The city of Ada is approximately 80 miles from Oklahoma City and 122 miles from Tulsa.
